Bucket of Willow Saplings
$15.00 "+ GST"
For 2026 we will have 12 varieties of saplings in these recycled buckets for sale from July till April 2027, after which they will be planted here. There will normally be 2 buckets (10 saplings) of each variety, each planted from cuttings from last years crop that did not sell before April.
This product provides customers with 5 live plants with healthy roots that should be planted in autumn in a prepared willow bed for settling in through the winter so they are ready to mature in your plot the next year. You also get the rods to harvest after leaf drop for making small craft projects.
This product is sold all year, but in our opinion is best purchased before the leaves of the plants drop in late autumn.
When the willows enter dormancy for the winter and drop their leaves, the rods can be cut and either used for weaving projects or to have some cuttings available to grow more new willow plants.
Depending on variety, the sapling willow rods typically have grown 2 to 4 feet tall from cuttings over their 1st summer, with the number of rods per plant mostly varying from 2 to 6 in number .
The re-cycled buckets were filled with 2 inches of gravel topped by 12 inches of sand and 3 inches of compost to act as a growing bed for the willows. Each bucket will weigh between 40 and 60 pounds at pick up . The buckets have 4 holes in the bottom to drain water. Typically, the willow roots will be just reaching the bottom of the buckets by their first autumn dormancy and the root ball will often be 4 inches across by 10 inches long. These yearling plants take transplantation very well.
This product is very heavy – over 50lbs and is available only for pickup at the Strobe Willows farm or by local truck delivery in the Alberni Valley.
