Make Your Own Products offer prepared willow materials to Strobe Willows customers for a faster start to making woven objects such as baskets and craft items.
Items currently include willow rods for weaving, and pre-shaped, trimmed frames, hoops and handles in both willow and apple wood.
All our Make Your Own products are available in what is called ‘brown’ willow, which are willow rods that are dried with the bark intact. The 16 varieties of willow weavers grown by Strobe Willows all have their own colour variations and general thicknesses, lengths and weaving characteristics.
‘Brown’ willow needs re-hydrating before being usable in weaving. In the dried state you will purchase these rods, they are quite brittle. After soaking ( a process that takes approximately 1 day for every foot in length of the rod), the rods become very flexible, as they were when they were growing and harvested.

Willow Basket Frame
$2.00 "+ GST"Willow basket frames are bent and dried when green (fresh harvested) to create the willow weaving foundation platform in round or curved shapes, basically creating the overall shape and sturdiness of the basket. The price is for 1 individual frame piece, though frame basket designs usually call for odd number multiples – 3, 5, 7, 9 etc. Frames are used as the base for many traditional designs of baskets, trays and ornaments. 3 sizes are available depending on the sizes and strengths needed for your basket design. 24″ for smaller baskets up to 10 inches across, 36″ for 12″ baskets…

Willow Weaving Rods
$12.00 "+ GST"Dried (brown) willow weaving rods with their bark left on are prepared by the purchaser for use in making woven baskets, decorative household and garden items as well as sculptures and furniture. The dry rods need to be re-hydrated in a water bath, trough, stream or pond for approximately 1 day for every foot of length. Brown willow weaving rods are sold by Willow variety, then by length required – between 3 to 6 feet long – and then in bundles by weight (measured in 1 pound increments). Apple Wood Frames
$5.00 "+ GST"Apple wood frames and Apple wood handles are very strong. Not as smooth as willow and adds a rustic touch to your basketry. Apple wood rods dry much darker brown than most willow so the ribs of your basket will be more prominent to the eye.

Willow Basket Handle
$2.00 "+ GST"The Willow Basket Handle is a ‘Handle Bow’ made of willow rod. Dimensions are approximately 10″ wide by 12″ high. Usually covered with ‘skeins’ or twisted willow rods during basket making, the Basket Handle is a foundation part of most baskets. These handle bows are made of ‘brown’ willow, dried with the bark intact. Depending on variety used, the colours will vary from dark brown to golden umber.
